The End of Programming as We Know It
Tim O’Reilly, founder of O'Reilly Media, joins us on High Signal
This week on High Signal, we're excited to share a conversation with Tim O’Reilly —someone who’s shaped how we think about open source, the internet, and the future of technology for decades. Tim argues that every major shift in computing—interpreters, scripting languages, the web—has made software development more accessible, and that the field has expanded not contracted. AI is just the next layer.

AI Isn’t Making Programming Disappear—It’s Expanding Who Gets to Build
Tim O’Reilly is the Founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media. Through his early work promoting the internet, Perl, Linux, open source, XML, and web services, Tim and his company helped bring foundational technologies into the mainstream. He’s known for coining influential terms like “Web 2.0” and for his ability to identify and amplify the work of forward-thinking technologists—what he calls “watching the alpha geeks.” He serves on the boards of organizations including Code for America, Maker Media, PeerJ, Popvox, Safari Books Online, and Civis Analytics.
On the show, Tim explains why AI doesn’t eliminate engineers—it expands the field. Just like solo creators now make music and films that once took full teams, AI is lowering the barrier to building software.
Breakthroughs Start on the Edges—not with Incumbents: Tim shares why decentralization consistently drives real innovation—and how that might play out in AI’s evolution.
System Design in a World Where Anyone Can Build: When anyone can be a builder, how should we think about software architecture, complexity, and long-term maintainability?
Think Like a Strategist, Not Just a Technologist: Platform shifts create winners and losers. Tim lays out a framework for how to think clearly and strategically about the changes ahead.
